Is this what Army basic training is like?

A friend of mine posted this message on one of his social sites and I copied it and here it is.

"My brother-in-law is at boot camp for the Army. He has been there for about 5 weeks. Today he got his cell phone... all day, and they were allowed to watch the soccer game. During phase 3 of training they get to keep their cell phones, and they have a mandatory carnival scheduled for the platoon to go to. Sounds more like the vacation I am on right now ;)"

Is this true? Is Army basic that much of a joke?

1. depends on were his basic training is. i heard Jacksonville is a cakewalk. but if he is at FT.Benning then no. it is not a cake walk and definitely not a joke

2. Yeah, pal....it is a joke!!! Please don't enlist since our military does not need a looser like you....DUH!!!

3. Yes, it is. Army basic training is a joke, which is why everyone, their grandma, and their drug dealer can get into the army these days.

4. Depends on where you go.

5. I have heard that many Basic Training companies are letting recruits have cell phone privileges for several hours on Sunday, if they are progressing in their training. I don't think that's a big deal. Society is changing - today's recruits probably don't even know how to operate a pay phone, which is how we made calls home "back in the day."

Maybe they turned on the World Cup game for an hour or so while the U.S. was playing. Again, not a huge deal. Probably the Drill Sergeants wanted to watch it and they turned into an object lesson in Loyalty or some other Army value. We got to watch parts of a movie under the same pretenses once. And there's often a "day away" from training scheduled in somewhere. We went to some kind of religious-group sponsored thing, where the religious service was voluntary, but everybody got to hang out and relax in a park for several hours whether they were religious or not.

After Phasing up from Basic Training, you get a lot more privileges.

And anyone who thinks it's some kind of vacation is perfectly welcome to go sign the dotted line and then post what they think of Afghanistan once they get there...

6. it really depends on where you go. When i went to BCT we didnt have anything like that we got to use the payphone on sunday for 5 mins then when we got back from our last field excersie we got out cell phone for the whole day on sunday as a reward for wining the most compitions during that cycle. Now I have seen a lot of articles in the army times how they are making BCT much easier and less stressfull personaly i think they need to make it harder because combat is not getting any easier and the wars are getting longer
